✅ Who Can Be Sponsored?
1. Spouse or Common-Law Partner
Legally married spouse
Common-law partner (living together for at least 12 consecutive months)
Conjugal partner (significant relationship, but unable to live together due to extenuating circumstances)
2. Dependent Children
Under 22 years old and not married or in a common-law relationship
Over 22 if financially dependent due to a physical or mental condition
Conjugal partner (significant relationship, but unable to live together due to extenuating circumstances)
3. Parents and Grandparents
Sponsored through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) (by invitation only)
Or invited on a long-term Super Visa (valid up to 10 years, allows stays up to 5 years at a time)
4. Other Relatives (in exceptional cases)
Orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren (under 18, not married)
Any relative, if the sponsor has no other family in Canada
🧾 Sponsor Eligibility Requirements
To sponsor a family member, you must:
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
Be at least 18 years old
Reside in Canada (or plan to return once your sponsored relative arrives)
Meet minimum income requirements (especially for PGP)
Not be in default of any previous sponsorships, immigration loans, or court orders
Agree to financially support the sponsored person for a specific period:
Spouse/partner: 3 years
Children: 10 years or until age 25 (whichever comes first)
Parents/grandparents: 20 years
📝 Application Process
Check eligibility of both sponsor and applicant
Prepare and submit a complete application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
Wait for processing and provide additional documentation if requested
If approved, your loved one becomes a Canadian permanent resident
